Ukraine has accused Russian forces of shelling workers at a factory in the town of Avdivka, north of rebel-held Donetsk. Ukraine’s military says its forces have thwarted 12 Russian attacks in the past 24 hours in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions. A statement on their Facebook page said that Russian forces had attacked the Popasana area and that fighting was still going on. It added that airstrikes and shootings had taken place at Ukrainian positions in the Azovostal steel plant area in Mariupol.
Russia, meanwhile, has deployed 22 battalions near the town of Izim to further penetrate the Donbass region, the UK Defense Department said in a briefing on Wednesday. It says Russia has not been able to speed up its operations and is struggling to break through strong resistance from Ukrainian forces. But even then they wanted to move further from Izim to capture the two cities of Kramatorsk and Severodnetsk.
The statement added that the occupation of these areas would consolidate Russian military control over the northeastern Donbass and would be an attempt to dislodge Ukrainian forces from the area.
