More than 200 vehicles, mostly private cars and motorcycles, were waiting at Banglabazar ghat of Madaripur to cross the river Padma this morning.
The river route has been witnessing crowds of holidaymakers returning to Dhaka after celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr at their village homes, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.
Huge rush of Dhaka-bound people were also seen on launch and speedboats.
Md Salauddin, manager of BIWTC’s Jazira’s Majhikandi and Banglabazar Ghat, said there is pressure of private vehicles at Banglabazar ghat. Around 200 vehicles were seen waiting at 11:30am today, he said.
There is also pressure of motorcycles on the ferries. Ferry no 4 has been earmarked for motorcycle crossings only. Five ferries are operating on the Shimulia-Banglabazar waterway.
BIWTC’s Shimulia ghat manager, Faisal Ahmed, said there were no vehicles waiting for crossing at Shimulia ghat. The pressure of private cars is coming from Banglabazar ghat. The ferries are full of private cars and motorcycles.
Md Suleiman, inspector of BIWTA’s Shimuliaghat, said there was no pressure of the country’s south-bound passengers on launch and speedboat at Shimulia ghat.
