Sci-fi films immerse viewers in a hypothetical science-based universe filled with aliens, artificial intelligence, and space travel. Humankind has been enthralled by futuristic planets and mind-bending notions like time travel and unidentified races lightyears distant for generations.

We are intrigued by space and otherworldly creatures because, in reality, we probably won’t experience either. The power of cinema is one way we may experience these extraterrestrials firsthand.

With so many sci-fi movies to select from, we’ve done the legwork for you and compiled a list of the greatest sci-fi films to watch if you want to think about the world, space, mankind, and technology.

E.T. (1982)

The majority of aliens who crash on Earth appear to be focused on one goal: global dominance. Think about the terrible extraterrestrials from War of the Worlds and Independence Day that just want to control humanity. Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, though, is a little different. E.T. not only arrives in peace, but he also wishes to return home. E.T. won the hearts and minds of millions of people, dethroning 1977’s Star Wars as the highest-grossing picture at the time. It’s a great classic, full of humor, joy, and a touch of sadness. This is a popular movie amongst children and adults alike.

The Terminator (1984)

The Terminator is a low-budget, high-concept film that borrows from a variety of genres to create a love tale set in a world of machines. Arnold Schwarzenegger played the main protagonist, a cyborg sent back in time to assassinate Sarah Connor, the mother of future resistance leader John Connor, in the 1984 film. Kyle Reese, a guardian sent by the resistance, will go to any length to keep her safe.

The Terminator, of course, launched James Cameron’s career, demonstrating his mastery of world-building, characterization, and genre. While the sequel had a larger budget, the first production’s creativity is amazing, resulting in a tightly planned thriller with some of the greatest ’80s set pieces. This movie is also featured in the top-rated sci-fi movies on IMDB.

Alien (1979)

The crew of a space transport ship is awoken when the onboard computer discovers slight traces of life on a neighboring planet. Their mandate requires them to visit the planet and investigate the situation. Not the best idea. Because they bring back a horrific alien parasite that suction-cups onto its victims’ faces, lays eggs, and then bursts out of the poor host’s chest.

With Alien, director Ridley Scott pioneered a new type of sci-fi horror picture, one based on the familiar things-go-bump, haunted-house template. The film’s suspense is just agonizing. But Scott’s choice to make one of the crew’s female members (Sigourney Weaver) become the film’s fiercest and most capable human hero was the finest of all.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

A list of fantastic sci-fi films would be incomplete without at least one Star Wars film. Because the Star Wars universe has grown so much since the 1977 debut of Star Wars: A New Hope, it’s difficult to choose just one. While the original is a true classic, Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back is probably the best out of them all.

A lot is going on in this movie. The opening battle takes you to the planet Hoth and we are introduced to Lando Calrissian, Princess Leia confesses her love for Han Solo, followed by the biggest shock of cinema history when Luke Skywalker finds out that Darth Vadar is his father. If this doesn’t convince you that Episode V is the best Star Wars movie of all time, then we don’t know what will.

The Adam Project  (2022)

Not a classic like the above-mentioned movies, but this is a great futuristic movie. Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds produced and starred in the movie which follows a time-traveling fighter pilot who crashes in 2022. He then joins forces with his 12-year-old self on a mission to safeguard the future. The film is humorous, sweet, and action-packed. It makes you want to travel back in time and save the world with your younger self.

We know that time travel is not possible and the chances of us traveling to space are also pretty slim. So, another way we can immerse ourselves in such worlds is through film, tv, comics, and even online games. The Out of This World slot machine is just one of many sci-fi-themed online games you can play to escape our world and enter a realm of aliens and spaceships.

Why not take a look for yourself and find the best Vegas online slots in Canada that are safe and secure for you to try out. You can check to see if any offer bonuses, check the most popular jackpot games, and see what other space-themed slots you may find. But first, which movie will you watch to escape on an extraterrestrial quest?
