The idea of ​​celebrating International Mother Language Day first came from Bangladesh. The General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was declared on 17 November 1999 as Mother Language Day. In it was decided that February 21 will be celebrated as International Mother Language Day.

In 1952, students and social workers of Dhaka University in Bangladesh organized a movement on 21 February to maintain the existence of their mother tongue. Many youths of Bangladesh were martyred in this movement. In memory of these martyred youth, UNESCO announced for the first time in the year 1991 that February 21 would be celebrated as Mother Language Day. The first International Mother Language Day was celebrated in the year 2000. In Bangladesh, February 21 is a national holiday.

In 2002, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) welcomed UNESCO’s decision to celebrate International Mother Language Day. On 16 May 2007, the United Nations General Assembly also sent a resolution to the member states “to promote the protection of all languages ​​used by the peoples of the world”.
