The body of a lawmaker from the ruling party has been recovered after anti-government protesters were shot dead in Sri Lanka.
The incident took place in the Nittambua area near the capital Colombo on Monday, Indian media NDTV reported.
Citing Sri Lankan police, the report said Amarakirthi Athukorala, an MP, fell in front of protesters in the Nittambua area.
He turned his shotgun on himself when apprehended by a police officer on the porch of the house where the shootings took place. Two people were seriously injured. At one stage of the clash, the MP fled to a nearby building. His body was later found.
Sri Lanka is facing its biggest economic crisis since independence in 1947. The people of the country are blaming the mismanagement of the government for this crisis. Opposition groups called for a boycott of the rally, which lasted for several days.
On Monday, pro-government protesters clashed with protesters in various parts of the country, including the capital. More than 50 people were injured. Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned on the same day to resolve the crisis.
Sri Lankan police have imposed a nationwide curfew to stop the violence.
Earlier on Friday, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa announced that his brother, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, had agreed to step down as prime minister.
Protests have been going on for a long time in the country which is suffering from various crises including economic crisis. To get out of this situation, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa asked the Prime Minister to resign.
Meanwhile, the president himself is under pressure to resign. From the beginning, ordinary people have been protesting, demanding that the president step down.
