Ram Prasad Bismil was born on 11 June 1897 in Shahjahanpur, district of Uttar Pradesh, India to Murlidhar Tomar and Moolmati. He was born in a Hindu Rajput Family. His father was an employee in the municipality and his mother was a housewife.

He learned Hindi from his father at home and was sent to learn Urdu from a moulvi. Despite his father’s objection, he was admitted to an English medium school. He also joined the Arya Samaj founded by Dayanand Saraswati which had a profound influence on him. Ram Prasad Bismil showed his talent in writing poetry.

He started writing powerful patriotic poems in Urdu and Hindi under the pen names of ‘Bismil’, ‘Ram’, and ‘Agyat’. The ideals of freedom and revolution got first ingrained in his mind after he read the death sentence passed on Bhai Parmanand, who was an Indian Nationalist and Arya Samaj missionary.

His ideals of freedom struggle stood in stark contrast to that of Mahatma Gandhi, and he would reportedly say “Independence would not be achieved by means of non-violence.”

After conflicting views and resentment with the Congress Party, he formed the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, which soon had leaders like Bhagat Singh and Chandra Shekhar Azad.

Mainpuri Conspiracy:

On January 28 1918, Ram Prasad Bismil published a pamphlet titled “Deshvasiyon Ke Naam Sandesh” which he distributed along with his poem “Mainpuri Ki Pratigya”. To collect funds for the party looting was undertaken on three occasions in 1918. Police searched for them around Mainpuri while they were selling books proscribed by the U.P. Government in the Delhi Congress of 1918. When police found them, Ram Prasad Bismil absconded with the books unsold.

When he was planning another looting between Delhi and Agra, a police team arrived and firing started from both sides. Ram Prasad Bismil jumped into the Yamuna River and Swam underwater. The Police and his companions thought that he had died in the firing during an encounter.

Later on, on 1 November 1919 the Judiciary Magistrate of Mainpuri announced the judgment against all accused and declared Ram Prasad Bismil and his companion as absconders.

Kakori Train Robbery:

On 9 August 1925, Ram Prasad Bismil executed a plan for looting the government treasury being carried in a train at Kakori, Luck Now, and Uttar Pradesh. Ten revolutionaries stopped this passenger train at Kakori, a station just before the Luck now Railway Junction.

They started firing toward it with semi-automatic German-made pistols. Ashfaqulla Khan, the chief head of HSRA, gave away his weapon to Manmath Nath and engaged himself in breaking and open the chest. Manmath Nath Gupta fired the pistol and accidentally shot a passenger Ahmed Ali, who had gotten down from the train to see his wife in the ladies compartment. 

More than 40 revolutionaries were arrested that day, whereas only 10 had taken part in this. Persons completely unrelated to this incident were also arrested. 

After 18 months of legal process, Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Roshan Singh, and Rajendra Nath Lahiri were sentenced to death. Ram Prasad Bismil was hanged on 19 December 1927 at the Gorakhpur Jail, and the rest were hanged at the Allahabad Jail.
