A statement from Russia’s foreign ministry said the move was in response to a “disastrous decision” by Germany. Russia’s diplomatic expulsion has led some in the diplomatic community to speculate that Russia could escalate its conflict with Western European countries.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Bayerbach on Tuesday condemned the move by Vladimir Putin’s government. “We had in mind that Moscow would take such a step,” he said. However, this decision is not justifiable in any way. The diplomats who were expelled by Russia did not commit any crime.
