For the first time since the start of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, a statement has been unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council. It expressed “strong support” for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ efforts to find a “peaceful solution” to the conflict in Ukraine.

Qatar-based Al Jazeera reported the information.

The brief statement, taken at a very brief meeting, did not use the words “war”, “conflict” or “aggression”.

Many members of the Security Council have stated opposition to using force or imposing sanctions on Russia. However, Moscow has called it a “special military operation.”

The five permanent members of the Security Council are Russia, the United States, China, France and the United Kingdom.

The statement said that the Security Council strongly supported the Secretary-General’s efforts to find a peaceful solution.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed the Security Council’s statement.

“Today, for the first time, the Security Council spoke in unison for peace in Ukraine,” he said.

“The world must come together to stop the tinkling of weapons and uphold the values of the UN Charter,” he said.

Russia launched an attack on Ukraine on 24 February. After almost two and a half months, there is no sign of an end to the war. Under such circumstances, the UN Secretary General visited Moscow and Kiev.
