History of the Portland Music Company

It was in the year 1927 when the sensual tones of the saxophone ignited America’s passion for hot jazz. The year is preferred to be good for the industry. The Saxophone Shop was opened by Bob Christiansen. He was a musician as well as an entrepreneur. The shop was opened on the Morrison Street. It is considered to be the heart of downtown Portland. Bob Christiansen himself was a great saxophonist. Since he was self-taught and couldn’t read music, he could still play in any band. The saxophone shop business was booming in consecutive years. In 1929, there was a stock market crash that brought his Roaring Twenties to an abrupt end. During the Great Depression, Bob Christiansen expanded The Saxophone Shop. He replaced the shop with a full-service store with various types of musical instruments. Christiansen’s renovated the store and eventually renamed it Portland Music Company.

Bob Christiansen was always a great leader. The Portland Music Company was recognized as the first store to offer musical instrument rentals to school children in Oregon. To promote instrument rental and music education in Oregon schools, Bob Christiansen and his colleagues traveled from town to town in a shiny black hearse, giving free evening concerts at local schoolhouses. Once, a Madras farmer was unable to pay the rental fee for his son’s instrument, so he gave Bob Christiansen a truck loaded with potatoes instead. Bob Christiansen eventually succeeded in selling the potatoes at the local market. Then he stopped his farmer, probably fearing that he would have to get rid of the potatoes again.

During World War II, swing reigned supreme power, and the whole country swayed to the sounds of massive dance bands. Demand for musical instruments was at an all-time high. However, new equipment was in short supply as many manufacturers turned their operations to producing weapons for the war. Those who remained in the music industry realized that the brass that was once used to make saxophones and trumpets was no longer available. It was because there was a need to develop bullet casings. Despite the lack of instruments for sale, Bob Christiansen turned his misfortune into an opportunity. Soon, he was able to get his business back on track. Portland Music Company, the company of Bob Christiansen, became the Portland Music as well as the Theatre Bureau.

Bob Christiansen essentially founded the first agency in Portland to book talents who were passionate about music. By building a network of professional musicians and music students, Bob Christiansen was able to meet the demand for quality musical entertainment. Around this time, Bob Christiansen began hosting free lunchtime concerts from the store’s second-floor balcony. These extremely popular concerts continued until the city forced them to shut down because they literally blocked traffic in downtown Portland.

After the war, the Portland Music Company continued to prosper. In 1974, Bob Christiansen hired Mark Taylor. He was a long-haired philosophy and music student who had just graduated. After completing a three-week trial period, Mark Taylor went to work at the Portland Music Company. He started earning the princely sum of $2.25 an hour. When Bob Christiansen and his wife Violet decided to retire in 1977 after 50 successful years in the music industry, Mark Taylor was presented with the opportunity of his lifetime. Mark Tylor was made the president of the Portland Music Company.

Mark Taylor took the reins of his Portland Music Company using his unique business arrangements. He had donated decades’ worth of profits and purchase prices to the Bob Christiansen Foundation. The Bob Christiansen Foundation was established to carry on the credo: “The richest kid is the poor one with no musical education.” Mark Tylor is currently the president of the Portland Music Company, which is officially owned by him. He has grown thanks to the assistance of his wife, Susan Tsugawa and his partner Doug Metzker, who is a loyal and dedicated staff. His wife, Susan Tsugawa manages the sheet music department of the Portland Music Company. The Portland Music Company currently operates a total five stores in the greater Portland area. The company covers everything from sheet music to professional digital recording equipment in the world of music. Portland Music Company continues to strive to be number one in the nation when it comes to providing unparalleled customer service to musicians and the music community.
