Former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will not flee the country. His son Namal Rajapakse said this.
Namal told AFP on Tuesday that the Rajapaksa family had no plans to leave Sri Lanka.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
The agitation has been going on for more than a month demanding the overthrow of the government in Sri Lanka due to the unprecedented economic crisis. The movement turned violent last Monday. Clashes broke out between the ruling party and anti-government protesters. Mahinda resigned as prime minister on May 9 in the face of protests.
Even after leaving the post of Prime Minister, Mahinda was not spared from public anger. Thousands of protesters stormed his official residence. At one point, he left the PM’s house with his family members in a military helicopter.
The protesters do not want to see anyone else in the government in favor of the king. They are demanding the resignation of Mahinda’s younger brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa from the presidency.
Protesters have taken up positions at the entrance of the country’s international airport to prevent lawmakers from fleeing the country after Mahinda stepped down as prime minister.
Namal is a Member of Parliament. He is seen by the king as the future of the family. He is accused of money laundering and corruption abroad. However, he is denying these allegations.
“There are many rumors that we are leaving the country,” Namal said. We will not leave the country. Namal described the national outcry against the family as a bad time for the king.
Namal said his father Mahinda would not resign as a lawmaker. He wants to play an active role in the election of his successor.
Namal added that his father is now safe. She is safe. He is keeping in touch with the family.
