As Twitter rebrands itself this morning, shooting itself in the foot, TikTok has announced introducing support for text posts. TikTok began as a platform for short-form video but eventually added image functionality to compete with Instagram. As people hunt for a new platform to post text-based information, it has added text posts that will likely compete with Twitter (Now X) and Meta’s Threads.

According to TikTok, the new content option will give creators another means of self-expression by enabling people to post their stories, poetry, lyrics, and other written content on the platform.

Now, three options are available when you access the app’s camera page: photo, video, and text. You will be directed to the text creation page, where you can input the content of your post after choosing the text option. You can then alter your context by including noises, adding a location tag, enabling comments, and enabling Duets. TikTok says text posts will be as engaging and dynamic as any video or picture.

Along with tags and hashtags, you can include stickers in text posts. The use of several background colours is another possibility. Your drafts can be saved and kept with other unpublished articles for further editing, like video or photo postings, or you can completely delete them.

In a blog post, TikTok stated, “At TikTok, we’re always looking to empower our creators and community with cutting-edge tools that inspire self-expression.” “Today, we’re excited to announce the extension of text posts on TikTok, a new format for text-based content creation that expands the choices for creators to share their ideas and express their creativity. Giving the written talent we’ve seen in comments, captions, and videos a dedicated room to shine with text posts, we’re broadening the possibilities of content creation for everyone on TikTok.

Although some people needed clarification about TikTok’s choice to start allowing photographs last year, it’s now recognized as a crucial aspect of the program. The same thing will likely occur with text submissions, especially given that some users have already posted text-based content on TikTok as a video or image. The new TikTok functionality only streamlines and improves the platform’s ability to add text-based content.

It’s hardly surprising that TikTok has chosen to add support for text posts now, especially given that Twitter is still making dubious decisions and restricting non-paying users. TikTok probably wants to give users who wish to publish text-based material an alternative option. The Threads app, which Meta released earlier this month and is still expanding its user base and traction in other countries, did something similar. Text postings on TikTok may not be used as frequently as on other platforms because they seem different than on Twitter or Threads.

To provide users new opportunities to express themselves and compete with other well-known social media platforms, TikTok, which has long led the market for short videos, is looking to expand once more.
