The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has written to the Minister of Commerce for the Union, Piyush Goyal, requesting that the nation of origin be required to be labelled on all products sold through e-commerce, including imported goods.

The decision was made when business owners in Delhi staged demonstrations against Chinese goods in the midst of the standoff between India and China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Tawang, which is located in Arunachal Pradesh.

“We have submitted a letter to the Minister of Commerce for the Union, Piyush Goyal, pressing him to make it mandatory to identify the country of origin on the items that are imported. There is currently no information available on a great number of topics. Consumers are unable to determine the location of the manufacturer of the products they purchase, particularly on e-commerce websites,” said Brijesh Goyal, chairman of the CTI.

He went on to say that even if people were against purchasing a product made in China, they still ended up purchasing it because the nation of origin was not listed on the goods. If the product clearly says where it comes from, Indians will be able to avoid buying Chinese goods. Goyal said that the central government should be working on a plan like this and should also change its policies on e-commerce and imports.

The chairman of the CTI added that China is profiting from Indian markets but is using that money in an unfair manner against India.

“The economic pillars that support China must be severed. The value of goods and services exchanged between India and China in the first nine months of this year exceeded $103.63 billion. While this is happening, the country’s trade deficit has ballooned to more than $75.69 billion,” he said.

During this time period, the value of goods shipped from China to India reached $89.66 billion. There was a rise that was equal to 31% of the total. In comparison, the value of goods shipped from India to China was only $13.97 billion, representing a 36.4% decrease. “If Indian businessmen and consumers boycott Chinese goods, then China will come to its senses,” said CTI chairman Goyal.
