For people who intend to visit Japan, I have some insights and tips on what you need to know for preparation. Any number of photos or text can adequately prepare for the culture shock, but going in with an open mind and a little mental prep can do wonders. Here are some useful tips before heading out to the great land of the rising sun.

 The Cash Rules

Japan is old-fashioned in handling money because most transactions are through bills and coins. It would help if you did not underestimate the power of coins since, unlike most countries, Japan has 100 yen and 500 yen coins. However, Japan ATMS will take your American cards, and you can withdraw and deposit easily.

Have a Plan

There are many things you can do in Japan, and it could make you feel like an idiot if you do not have a plan. For instance, traveling by train in Japan has a well-planned schedule, and trains are never late. A good plan will help you get all the good kinds of stuff. Depending on the time of the year, many ryokans, hotels, good Airbnb, and ticketed events will help you be on top of your game.

Carry a Pocket Wi-Fi

Instead of buying a sim card, you consider renting a pocket Wi-Fi. The pocket Wi-Fi is convenient because small portable chargers help you carry around and connect to your phone via Wi-Fi. Although you cannot make calls, you will have internet access. The Japanese usually communicate through line anyway.

A JR Pass is a Must

You must purchase a JR pass if you want unlimited rides on any JR train, including the Shinkansen. JR applies for people who may wish not to spend their time in Tokyo to Osaka; the JR pass is worth it.

Don’t Overpack

Depending on your taste Japan is pretty expensive. Don’t leave lots of room for souvenirs; do not forget to buy toiletries. It would help if you were not afraid to leave your towel and shampoo at home because you can easily buy cheaper toiletries in Japan. If you buy a number of things, it might be a good ideal to send them via post or use the services of one of those reputable shipping companies in Japan.

Japan Has no Subtitles.

Make sure you familiarize yourself with Japanese phrases because you need them. If you are not in Tokyo, everything is in Japanese. However, the main signs and stations are in English, but everything else is expressed in Japanese.

Etiquette

Japanese people are pretty arrogant, but there are some things that you need to observe not to make things terrible. You should ensure that you put your clothes in the lockers. Make sure you shower yourself because no one wants to bathe in American stinks.

No Shoes

Just like in Asian households, there are no shoes in the house. When you visit someone at their house, take your shoes off and point them nicely parallel to the door. There should be no shoes in the restaurant.

Why is it called Japan?

Have you ever wondered why it is called Japan?  The country is called Nihon or Nippon in Japanese but actually while they sound different both Nihon and Japan have the same etymology and they both mean “the origin of the sun”. That is why the country is sometimes called the land of the rising sun. If you would like to know more about the etymology of Japan, refer to this article.
