Personalized number plates are a good investment. They reliably tend to increase or hold their value very well and have proven to be a solid investment over time.
Choosing the most sought-after private number registrations carefully will go a long way in giving you the best return on your investment. Registrations that include low numbers (such as number 1) that spell out popular occupations or names are great examples of registrations that will always be in high demand.
Whether you chose to retain the personalized number plate registration from Newreg as an investment or assign the plate to a vehicle, its value will remain the same.
Promoting your Business
The average commuter in the UK spends up to 4 days sitting in traffic every year. This presents an opportunity for businesses: you can use your car to promote your business to this untapped audience.
Witty, unique, and specialized number plate numbers can catch people’s attention and help your brand appear a lot more professional and distinctive. For examples of how you can creatively use your number plate numbers, check out our Choosing your Private Plate Page.
They are unique, fun, and expressive
People who love their cars will often personalize them. A private number plate is a great way of making a car truly your own. You can personalize your plate using your profession and your name or express your personality by choosing a plate that’s inspired by your favorite interests or hobbies.
You can also express your sense of humor by using a funny number plate. There are many opportunities for fun and creativity when personalizing a number plate. This also makes them a great and memorable gift.
You won’t struggle to remember your registration number again…
… and you will spend less time wandering around the parking lot, unsure which one is yours.

How does it all work?
When you find your perfect plate, it’s easy to buy through Select. Use the search function to find the number you want, and then hit the “Buy” button to make your payment fast, and securely online.
Read our handy step-by-step guide for more information about ordering a physical plate, assigning a personalized plate to a vehicle, and more.
Step 2: Get the number plate made
After buying the plate, you will be given a certificate of entitlement. This certificate allows you to put the plate on your car.
Keep in mind that you won’t automatically be issued with the physical plate. Rather, you will have to buy new ones from a registered number plate supplier, who should ensure that the plates are made to suit the correct legal standard and will fit your vehicle correctly. You can find more information about number plates on the government’s website.
Things to bear in mind
You will have to give your supplier proof of identity, such as the V750 along with your driving license. There are strict legal standards that apply to UK registration plates, and having a plate that doesn’t fit these regulations is an automatic MOT failure. That’s why it’s important to work with a registered and reputable supplier.
Step 3: Assign your vehicle
Legally speaking, you don’t have to assign a registration plate to your vehicle at this point. Your retention document will be valid for 10 years, within which time you can choose to assign the plate to your vehicle or just keep ownership of the number.
If you want to assign a number plate to your vehicle, you can apply for the same through the UK Private Vehicle Registration Service. You can find a step-by-step guide to assigning a private number plate to your vehicle on the gov. UK website.
If you want to assign the plate to your vehicle immediately online or to learn more about how to apply via the post, check out the gov. UK website.
A few things to remember:
Your vehicle should be registered with the DVLA, have a valid SORN (be taxed), and be roadworthy.
You will also need to have one of the following documents to successfully go through the assignment process:
a V750 certificate of entitlement
a V778 retention document
an online reference number
Once you have assigned your new number, you have to put the new plates on the vehicle before you can legally drive it.
Step 4: Inform your insurer
It’s your responsibility to inform your car insurer of the change in registration. You should do this when the new private number plate has been securely fitted to your vehicle.
