Introduction:

One of Korean Telco Giant SK Telecom largest mobile carriers, SK Telecom (SKT), will invest $100 million in Anthropic, a business co-founded by former founders of OpenAI. The telco company announced on Sunday.

Three months after Spark Capital led Anthropic to raise $450 million in its Series C investment round in May, funding news was announced. Through its venture capital arm, SK Telecom Venture Capital (SKTVC), SKT took part in the Series C round before making the most recent investment. SAP, a German software company, also invested in Anthropic last month.

SKT is gaining ground in the hotly contested generative AI space race through its strategic investment in Anthropic. According to the telecom, Anthropic and SKT intend to jointly create a multilingual large language model tailored for multinational telecom companies. Jared Kaplan, co-founder and Anthropic’s chief science officer, will oversee the overall strategy for customisation and the product roadmap.

Four Global Telco AI Alliance members, including Deutsche Telekom, e&, and Singtel, can offer AI developments tailored to their users in each market thanks to the LLM that SKT and Anthropic will jointly build. English, Korean, German, Japanese, Arabic, and Spanish would all be supported by the LLM.

Anthropic, a 2021 startup, is developing Claude, an artificial intelligence (AI) system that, like OpenAI’s Chat GPT, helps businesses manage tasks, including searching, generating replies, automating workflows, coding, and text processing in natural conversations. The most recent upgrade, Claude Instant 1.2, from the Google-backed AI business, integrates the advantages of Claude 2, its second-generation AI chatbot.

Claude’s use cases for the telecom sector will include “industry-specific customer service, marketing, sales, and interactive consumer applications,” according to SKT.

In a statement, SKT CEO Ryu Young-sang said, “We hope to establish synergy and gain leadership in the AI ecosystem with our global telecom partners by combining our Korean language-based LLM with Anthropic’s powerful AI skills.
