All about the electric car charger

electric car

It seems obvious, but without the right electric car charger, BEVs — Battery Electric Vehicles — and PHEVs — Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles — won’t be able to get going if their battery isn’t properly charged.

Now that sustainable mobility is the order of the day, electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles are on the rise. But it is common when entering this new world to have doubts about electric car chargers; Therefore, in this post, all your questions about it are resolved.

How do you charge an electric car?

To understand how an electric car is charged, it is necessary to know the different types of recharging, their modes, and the types of connectors that exist. You can charge electric vehicles in three ways:

  • Conventional charging: It is done with a normal 16-amp plug with power from 3.6 kW to 7.4 kW of power. They charge the vehicle’s batteries in about eight hours, although this also depends on the capacity of the batteries and the recharging power.
  • Semi-fast recharge: It uses a 32-amp plug, and its power varies between 11 kW and 22 kW. On average, it recharges the vehicle’s batteries in about four hours.
  • Fast charging: It reaches a maximum power of 50 kW so that it can recharge 80% of the vehicle in half an hour. However, the existing electrical network needs to be adapted to enjoy this type of charging, as it requires a very high power level. Thus, you need to use the services of expert electric vehicle charging solutions.

When an electric vehicle is fully charged, it can boast about 300 kilometers of autonomy, although some can exceed 700 kilometers. It should be noted that, in the case of electric vehicles, consumption is higher when driving at high speeds on highways. On the other hand, regenerative braking increases autonomy around the city as the car recharges itself.

What do you need for the installation of an electric charger?

You should know that there are different power outlets for this type of vehicle:

  • The type 2 connector is used by 90% of the models circulating in Europe to charge alternating current.
  • The CCS Combo allows charging in alternating or direct current for fast charging.

You can also find out the appropriate charger for each vehicle according to the type of electrical installation in the home since it can be single-phase or three-phase. The second is faster, but not all cars support it. As for the charging speed, it will depend on each vehicle’s characteristics and the driver’s needs.

Steps to follow in the installation of an electric car charger

Installing an electric vehicle charger in your garage or wherever you need it is more accessible than it may seem, especially since more and more manufacturers include the installation of the charging point at home as part of the purchase package of a plug-in vehicle.

It should be noted that the legislation is different for those who have a private garage and those who share it with other neighbors. In this second case, you do not need the consent of these neighbors, but you will have to present a document informing them that you will install a charging point in your square.

Suppose there are more neighbors interested in this. In that case, several charging points for community or individual use can even be installed, although this option requires secondary meters so that each neighbor pays for what they consume.

How long does an electric car take to charge?

We have already told you how long an electric car takes to charge: on average, with a power of 7.4 kW, the vehicle will take between seven and eight hours on average to fully charge. However, this depends on the recharging power and the capacity of the batteries. As the power of the charger increases, the time to charge the vehicle will decrease.

What is the price of an electric charger?

There are many factors to take into account to calculate the budget when installing an electric vehicle charger with these characteristics: the distance that separates the place where the charger will be installed from the home meter influences, the price of the quality of service and materials, the rate of each installer, and many more.
