The Arc browser from The Browser Company is now open to all users after operating in invite-only mode for over a year. With this announcement, the business raises the browser’s version to 1.0. To promote the open launch, it also revealed a new website.

Arc is only presently accessible to Mac users, but the company intends to release a Windows version later this year. It has a mobile companion app but is not a full browser.

Josh Miller and Hrush Agrawal, co-founders of Branch and former workers at Facebook, created The Browser Company in 2019. It raised $5 million 2021 from prominent investors, including Jeff Weiner from LinkedIn, Ev Williams from Medium, and Dylan Field from Figma, to provide a fresh web browsing experience.

However, given that it treats tabs differently — they appear more like programs — new users may encounter a high learning curve. Life with Arc will be simpler if you get used to navigating the internet using keyboard shortcuts. Because it’s a bit of a “nerdy” product, numerous customized shortcuts are available for various actions.

You can save various tabs associated with them in Arc by creating distinct “Spaces” for them, such as “Work,” “Entertainment,” “Vacation,” and “Note Taking,” so you can easily access them. Six tabs (sites) accessible from all spaces can be pinned, and tabs located inside of areas. Additionally, this new browser includes an integrated whiteboard and notetaking features. It isn’t effortless, I know.

Its strategy of archiving tabs rather than completely dismissing them in the sidebar can cause users to give up after only a few hours of use. The business anticipates that the updated website will provide more browser details before users attempt to use it, easing the learning curve.

Arc is a desktop browser, but they also released an iPhone app in March that allows you to place tabs in gaps while browsing on a mobile device to access them later. Additionally, the firm released a fun feature called Boosts that enables non-technical users to modify a website’s appearance and layout, including removing certain parts and buttons.

A toolbar that resides on top of the browser window and makes it simple to reach the URL bar and site settings was also introduced by Arc over the past few weeks. Users had to access these functions through the sidebar in the past.

Additionally, the business unveiled picture-in-picture support for Google Meet and a per-site control panel to turn on or off boosts, developer mode, and picture-in-picture settings. The multi-window support has also been improved, and speed enhancements have been made.

An AI assistant is built into many commercial browsers, including Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Sigma OS. According to Arc, the company is considering adding AI functionality to its browser. The business recently displayed a demo of how AI could assist Arc users in changing various website elements. Given that The Browser Company intends to offer additional upgrades and new features following the release of version 1, certain functionalities might eventually be added.
