Advocate General Matiur Rahman Akand, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Lawyers’ Council and a prominent Supreme Court lawyer, has called for the victory of the Nationalist Unity Panel nominees in the forthcoming Bar Council elections to establish rule of law, justice and human rights in the country.
He made the call at a gathering of legal leaders on Tuesday afternoon at the initiative of the Supreme Court Bar Branch of the Bangladesh Lawyers Council.
Advocate Matiur Rahman Akand said, “There is no such thing as democracy, rule of law and human rights in Bangladesh. The court is the last refuge of the people. Even in this court people are being harassed in various ways. The incident that took place in the wake of the Supreme Court Bar Association election is extremely sad. The nation does not want this from the lawyers of the Supreme Court.
He further said that during the tenure of this government, the people’s right to vote has been taken away and the electoral system has been destroyed. The continuity of holding elections of various bar associations is also being destroyed during the tenure of this government. In such an environment, the election of Bangladesh Bar Council, a large body of lawyers, is going to be held on May 25. The Bar Council has an important role to play in the professional development of lawyers and the establishment of professionalism and justice among lawyers. The Bar Council’s role in ensuring the professional privileges of lawyers, including the listing of lawyers and the inclusion of lawyers in the Supreme Court, is largely not being met. Winning the candidates of the Nationalist Unity Panel in this election will save the court yard from the stagnation of the judiciary, long process of getting justice and corruption.
