His mother wanted him to become a great Sanskrit scholar and persuaded his father. His father sent him to Kashi Vidyapeeth at Banaras to study. He was just 15 years old when he joined the non-cooperation movement in 1921, started by Mahatma Gandhi. As a result of which, he got arrested on 20th December. When he was presented before the magistrate, he declared that his name was “Azad,” his father’s name was “Swatantra,” and their residence was “Jail”.
