Chetan Bhagat was born on 22 April 1974 in New Delhi, India. He completed his Btech degree at IIT Delhi, before doing his MBA at IIM Ahmedabad. Chetan Bhagat was placed in Canada through his campus placements. However, He lost his job within six months as the company in which he was working got closed in 1998. He then took the job of an Investment Banker in Hong Kong.
He spent most of his time in the office writing, thinking and completing his novels. And in March 2008 returned to India, with his wife and 3-year-old twin sons. He there joined as a bank director in Kodak House, Mumbai. In 2009, to become a full-time writer he ended his banking career.
