Discover How Dior Manifested the 16-Century Chic Style in the Paris Fashion Week

Deciphering the language of public dress, particularly that worn by the powerful and popular, has now become a type of competitive sport, practiced in the spaces of Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.

“The Message of So-and-Outfit” So’s has been such a prevalent descriptor for photos that it has become a cliché. That doesn’t make it any less a part of modern life, or that the filter-down effect doesn’t apply to everyone once they walk out the door.

Women have spent generations attempting to break free from heels and corsets, but the current Dior collection, which was shown on Tuesday, September 27, at Paris Fashion Week, presented them as a form of “ironic power dressing.”

Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s womenswear designer and outspoken feminist, stated that the corsets, crinolines, and other historical things inspired by 16th-century French queen Catherine de Medici remained modern and useful despite their appearance.

So there was Maria Grazia Chiuri of Dior, referencing Catherine de Medici, the Italian wife of King Henry II of France and the only woman to rule France as regent. Ms. Chiuri noted during a preview that Catherine was one of the first women to “use clothes to define authority.”

She said that the basketlike dresses have a “functional” dimension and are meant to evoke the power clothing trend and regal imagination of the 1970s and 1980s.

Worked into a mesh of almost three-dimensional blossoms in mostly black, but also white and goldtone raffia. It was a strange decision — artistically effective but practically impossible to imagine, particularly when worn with soft, quilted corsets fastened on above thin tank tops, as if it were courtly streetwear,  which De Medici ensured were mass-produced by French royal workers.

Along with them came a variety of gorgeous styles that exposed themselves with a subversive casualness: strapless little dresses with bell-shaped skirts that reached mid-thigh; bralettes that wrapped around the back and were fastened in the front with a ribbon and bow at the rib cage; lace-trimmed boxer shorts; nightshirts; and long skirts that were thrown on top but left undone so they billowed behind like a train.
