Growing up is making choices about what’s important to you. It’s also about learning to decide the things you’re willing to sacrifice and the things you’ll never give up regardless of what. It’s not always good to stay the course and fight; sometimes, you’ll need more maturity and courage to surrender and let go.

There’s a lot of change and development this week, beginning with an entire show devoted (mostly) to Hee Do and her mother. However, here’s where one of my main complaints about this show is revealed as, more than ever, the episode caused me to feel that the same kind of changes in the storyline of the past was taking place in a new way at the moment.
There’s no reason why it’s taking place right now compared to any time over the past ten years.
Perhaps you can claim that we’re viewing the present through the eyes of Min-chae rather than Hee-do’s. And Min-chae may not be aware of certain aspects until she was exposed to the same from Hee-do’s point of view.
However, I wonder what would have been more beneficial to let Hee-do discover her diary and relive her youth while trying to parent teens. This way, the current story will be more relevant.
The primary conflict Hee-do and her mother face this week is with her dad’s death and how the Mom of Hee-do has dealt with this loss. In other words, her approach to it. Hasn’t yet dealt with the loss. In a desperate bid to be a successful newscaster, the mother of Hee-do has tried to put all her feelings aside every time and sacrificed her family to be professional.
She even skipped her husband’s funeral, as she decided to cover breaking news instead to demonstrate her skills after being called out for not doing enough. While they’ve not spoken about it, she has never been forgiven by her.
In the timeline for 1999, As the date for Dad’s funeral is near, Hee-do discovers that the chairs made of wood that he designed for his family are in decay. Mom promises to bring them to the carpenter to repair them; however, you wouldn’t think it? That she promised breaking news repeatedly surfaces on the day she promised. Again, Mom decides to go the extra mile to work, despite her pledge to Hee-do.
Mom hopes that Hee-do will understand her choices simply because she is now an adult. However, she argues that she’s still stuck emotionally at the age of 13 because of the traumatic loss of her father and having been abandoned by her mother that same day.
The message finally gets to Mom. However, she takes her time to show the issue. She gets the chairs replaced, yet she cannot say anything and makes Hee-do imagine she’s just thrown them away. Hee-do finds out the truth after she decides to inquire from the carpenter’s instruction so that she can construct new chairs. She also happens to find the originals in his workshop.
Yet, Mom is trying. She invites Hee-do to visit Dad’s graveyard for what is believed to be the first visit since his father’s death. In the grave, Mom completely breaks down, crying in the arms of Hee-do and admitting that she misses the man she loves so much (a fact she’d previously claimed she didn’t know about).
To reinforce this pivotal moment in their relationship, today’s Mom promises her daughter that she won’t leave her since she was absent throughout Hee-do’s childhood.
Then, we can put our past behind us when our high schoolers begin thinking about the future. They’re about to enter their final year of high school, which means some significant decisions must be made.
In the beginning, Ji-Woong draws up a plan for how he can reveal his feelings to Yoo-rim and declare their relationship formal. He plans to announce the performance of his band. However, the fencing class is scheduled for the same day. Ji-Woong reaches out to Yi-jin in search of suggestions. Yi-jin reveals to Coach Yang that he needs Yoo-rim and Heedo to conduct a last-minute interview and take his two friends to the concert instead.
It’s a wonderful evening all around. Instead of the large display he’d thought of, Ji-Woong reveals the truth quietly and mouths the words while Yoo-rim and Ji-Woong look at the crowd. This is more intimate and affecting.
Meanwhile, Yi-jin acts as a replacement for the guitarist in the band and reminisces about his happy high school days while she performs. Motivated, Hee-do prompts him to record a positive script by the broadcasting club. Seung-wan then plays it through the speakers to calm all stressed students about the upcoming tests.
The stress of graduating increases with each passing day, affecting students differently. One fencer, for instance, has lost her passion for the sport and would like to take a different route in life. Coach Yang, however, refuses to let her go. Yoo-rim and Hee-do stand up for their teammates by taking a walk out of the practice area in protest. Then after putting them all to the task, coach Yang agrees to a condition: the girl has to be able to advance to the quarterfinals of the next tournament.
With the help of Hee-do and Yoo-rim, she can do exactly what she says. Coach Yang attempts to convince her to complete the event because she’s come to this point, but she decides to stay with her own decision that she’s finished fencing and is free to decide what she will do with the next chapter of her career.
That is what brings the subject of Seung-wan. She’s seen a teacher beat Ji-Woong and her classmates repeatedly before finally snapping. Instead of distracting her teacher, she confronts Ji-Woong. And when he tries to convince her to make a police call, She stares him in the face and calls the police.
Incredibly, the police are on the side with the superintendent, teacher, and superintendent. They refuse to discredit the use of corporal punishment (which has just been “banned” as it is completely dependent on the individual schools to interpret the law as they wish).

Seung-wan makes a tearful, happy face when she says goodbye. She and her former fencer friend are walking together on the way from school, and they both climb over the gate together and walk away.
With the closing of all these chapters with the closing of the millennium is near, as are fears of Y2K. The friends meet for a celebration on New Year’s Eve. Even though no one truly believes that the world is ending, Seung-wan and Ji-Woong, and Yoo-rim choose to spend the last few moments of the year with family. In case of emergency.
That leaves Hee-do and Yi Jin in a secluded spot. As the clock counts down, Heedo makes an instant decision and leans over to kiss Yi Jin, exactly as one day is over and a new one starts.
