Companies that provide telecommunication services make it possible to connect or communicate without engaging in physical contact. The telecom industry has everything covered at our fingertips, whether it be calls made over the phone or the internet or written, or rather typed, communications sent through emails and SMS.
Global communication has been made possible through the use of cables, wires, waves, and even wireless transmission. Internet service providers, landline and wireless telephone operators, cable companies, and satellite firms are examples of businesses in the telecommunications industry.
Only major national carriers owned the telecom industry even in the late 1990s. Nonetheless, the industry began to be accessible for privatization by the end of 2002. From that point forth, this sector in India entered a new age. There are now several telecom businesses in India providing service to the public. But, only a few managed to survive the competition and secure their position in both our hearts and the market.
The Indian telecommunications market is dominant with a few of the telecommunication industry leaders, like Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL, and MTNL. These are also probably the only players in the market to still be running. But recently, BSNL and MTNL’s user base has strongly shifted to other providers, and a few months back, BSNL was also on the verge of shutting down.
As of today, the leading telecom firm is Reliance Industry’s Jio. Leading in second is Bharti Airtel, with a broad userbase very competitively close to Jio’s. There has been a constant comparison between Jio and Airtel for the past few years. The duo’s domination has been very painful for many telecom service providers that shut down soon after Jio’s arrival and Airtel’s model and plan change.

Reliance Jio –
Reliance Jio is a subsidiary of Reliance Industries operating in the telecom industry. The firm provides a variety of services, including OTT services, wireless broadband with internet access, fixed-line and mobile phones, and wireless broadband. Jio now offers 4G and 4G+ services. Moreover, it has plans to upgrade its services to 5G and 6G.
Bharti Airtel-
A publicly traded firm in the telecom industry, Bharti Airtel Limited does business as Airtel. On July 7, 1995, Sunil Bharti Mittal started it. Its headquarters are in New Delhi, India, on Nelson Mandela Road.
The services offered by Airtel include 2G, 3G, 4G LTE, and 4G+. Airtel has a 31.56% market share in the telecom industry, according to TRAI data. It has added almost 7,10,000 new users in the past year. Its revenue as of 2021 is 101,258 Crore INR.
Vodafone Idea-
As the name implies, Vodafone Idea Limited, usually referred to as VI, is a partnership between Idea and Vodafone. It was established in 2018 as a result of the merger of two significant telecommunications corporations with headquarters in Mumbai and Gandhinagar, respectively.
After Jio and Airtel, the firm received a total of 269.03 million users, placing it as the third-largest telecom provider in India. The market share held by VI represents 23.15% of the overall market share held by Indian telecommunications firms.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)-
The Indian government’s Ministry of Communication owns the telecommunications firm Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). It is a statutory corporation with its corporate headquarters in New Delhi that was established in the year 2000. It functions in the fields of broadband, internet television, IPTV, fixed-line telephony, and mobile phones. By the end of June 2021, BSNL had 10.25% of the wireless and wired market share.
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL)-
The Indian government’s Ministry of Communication owns Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, often known as MTNL or Bombay Telephone Limited, a BSNL subsidiary.
Mobile, fixed-line, digital television, wired and wireless internet, and IPTV are all areas of work and service provided by MTNL. According to reports from 2021, MTNL barely holds 0.29% of the market share for the telecommunications industry when combining wired and wireless services.
