Haldiram’s was also caught in a dispute over the packaging of one of their snacks during the meat ban and halal food issue. After a video surfaced of a reporter heckling a staffer at one of the firm’s outlets over the “Urdu” writing on the box, the food company led online trends. Many people criticised the reporter and praised Haldiram’s employees for refusing to submit.
A reporter from Sudarshan News TV is seen having a verbal fight with a lady employee at a Haldiram’s store in a video that has gone viral. She is overheard asking the employee why the information on the packaging of a foodstuff intended for persons fasting during Navratri was printed in Urdu. The reporter can also be heard questioning what they were attempting to hide and if the snacks included “animal oil, cow oil” in the video.
The product in question is the firm’s ‘Falhari Mixture,’ a Gujarati snack consisting of a “sweet mix of peanuts and potatoes with mild spices.” On the front of the packaging, there is wording in English and Gujarati, as well as a green dot, indicating that it is a vegetarian food, according to a photo on the company’s website.
The worker is overheard telling the reporter, “You may do anything ma’am, Haldiram’s would not entertain such tantrums,” after the reporter claimed the firm is “betraying Hindus who fast during Navratri.”
As the reporter presses the staff for answers, the employee adds that the store attracts individuals from many walks of life who speak a variety of languages, and that there are packets with information written in Hindi and English. “Ma’am, aapko Urdu kyun padhni hai?” (Why do you have to read in Urdu, ma’am?) The reporter isn’t the only one who has reservations about the packaging. Others published photographs and videos of the goods online before the video went viral, seeking answers. It should be noticed that the text on the pack is printed in Arabic rather than Urdu.
Although many people called for a boycott of Haldiram’s products, others disagreed, stating “it’s ludicrous.” Many others clarified that Arabic texts are required for Indian items shipped to the Middle East, and that the reporter could have avoided the incident by simply translating the text with Google Lens.
Many others praised the employees for standing up to the reporter and stressed that such matters that threaten our country’s unity should not be tolerated.
