Jamsetji Tata was born on 3 March 1839 to Nusserwanji and Jeevanbai Tata in Navsari, Gujarat. He belonged to a Parsi-priest Family. He was born into a well-respected but poor family of priests. Jamsetji Tata was the only son of Nusserwanji and jeevanbai Tata. He was the first member of the family who tried his hand at business rather than joining the priesthood.
When he was 14-year-old he was sent to Bombay by his father. There he completed his graduation from Elphinstone College. His parents believed in his abilities and supported him to follow his passion.

After graduating from Elphinstone College he joined his father’s firm of exporting and trading. His father wanted him to be a part of their business, so he sent him to China to gain some knowledge about business and details about exporting and trading.
