Mangal Pandey Biography:
Mangal was born on 19 July 1827 in Nagwa village, a village in upper Ballia district, in Uttar Pradesh to Divakar Pandey and Abhay rani Pandey. He belonged to a Hindu Brahmin family.
He enrolled in the Bengal Army in 1849, the regiment of the British East India Company. As a private soldier (sepoy) he got enlisted in the 5th company of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry in March 1857. There were also several Brahmins in this regiment.
A new Enfield rifle was introduced into India and the cartridge was rumoured to be greased from animal fat, primarily from pigs and cows. To use this rifle the soldiers have to bite off the ends of the greased cartridge to load the weapon.

Mangal Pandey however being a Hindu Brahmin revolted against the British as the cow is a holy animal to the Hindus and the pig is abhorrent to the Muslims. The use of fats from these animals was considered controversial by the Indian Soldiers.
Perhaps Mangal Pandey actually understood the true motive of the British to divide their country into Hindus and Muslims to ease their dominance. Then he took violent action against the British army to show them their disapproval.
