Sri Lanka’s ruling party MP has died after clashes with anti-government protesters. A mayor’s house was set on fire. Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has also resigned. The incidents took place on Monday (May 9) amid widespread protests and violence across the country.

The Economic Times quoted AFP as saying that some people were blocking the road in front of the car of government party MP Amarkirthi Athukorla in the Sri Lankan town of Nitambuwa on Monday. Amarkirthi fired at them, injuring at least two people.
The Sri Lankan MP then tried to take shelter in a nearby building. He was later found dead there.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror reported that a group of anti-government protesters set fire to the official residence of Sarat Lal Fernando, the mayor of Moratuwa, in the Wilorawat area of the country. However, the fire was brought under control, authorities said.
The Lankan media also reported that three people were injured in the shooting in Nitambuwa. The condition of one of them is critical.
At least 130 people were hospitalized in Colombo on Monday after being injured in a clash between anti-government protesters and pro-government protesters, the Sri Lankan news agency NewsFirst reported.
