Saying that the emergence of Covid-19 pandemic shook the entire world to the core would not be an understatement. While every sector bore the brunt of this crisis, the healthcare sector has been the one to have suffered the most. While the sector shouldered the entire weight of saving lives, it also faced some problems of its own.

However, according to PharmAid MD Sanjeev Nanda, the pandemic has also presented the healthcare sector in Russia with an extensive array of new opportunities. “A new disease getting transmitted at an exponential pace was something that the world had never seen before. However, it pushed the healthcare providers to explore the uncharted territories,” said Nanda.

He added, “The pre-Covid healthcare system in Russia and elsewhere was not prepared to deliver medical care without getting patients to the hospital, especially at such a large scale. The pandemic gave birth to an urgent need for upgradation of the existing medical care infrastructure and exploring technology enabled options such as remote patient management.”

According to Sanjeev Nanda, while the crisis has disrupted the healthcare sector in Russia and other CIS nations, the care providers and related services have been quite prompt in coming up with a robust response. Several providers championed innovation and revaluated their business model.

Upon being asked about the challenges that the healthcare sector in Russia faces, the PharmAid MD suggested that talent management and cost management are the two foremost challenges. “Retaining talented individuals remains a key priority for healthcare providers that are experiencing a high turnover rate,” said Sanjeev Nanda.

He continued, “It is unfortunate that talent management in the healthcare segment in Russia and other CIS nations needs improvement. The decision makers need to understand that talent management is much more than just remuneration; it involves a sense of security – mentally, physically, and financially.”

Listing cost management as the second biggest challenge faced by medical care sector in Russia, the PharmAid MD pointed out that as the healthcare expenditure is increasing manifold, cost management can be achieved by implementing automated material management systems which could help monitor the consumption and cost of resources, ultimately assigning the right cost to the right service.
