Sri Lanka erupts in anti-government protests They are protesting because of the economic crisis. Meanwhile, the death toll from clashes between government supporters and anti-government protesters has risen to two and seven.

Among the dead was a member of parliament from the ruling party. In addition, more than 190 people were injured. The injured have been admitted to different hospitals across the country. News from the BBC.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mahinda Rajapaksa had to leave his official residence in the face of mass protests by army guards. Earlier, thousands of protesters broke through the main gate of the residence and stormed inside. They tried to attack the main two-storey building of the ‘Temple Tree’ residence in the capital. There, the prime minister was trapped with his family members.

Earlier, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was in deep financial crisis, resigned amid widespread protests. He accepted the resignation letter sent by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Monday.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the younger brother of Prime Minister Mahinda. Opposition parties in Sri Lanka have been blaming the country’s worst financial crisis since independence.

Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections.
