It appears like Spotify’s anticipated “Superpremium” service is about ready to go live. The Superpremium service now includes a fancy logo and a longer list of capabilities beyond the 24-bit lossless audio we’ve been anticipating, according to references Chris Messina found in the code of the Spotify app. The expanded feature set seems to be predicated on incorporating recently discovered AI playlist generation tools, cutting-edge mixing tools, more hours of audiobook listening, and a customized service called “Your Sound Capsule.”
Moreover, Messina mentioned this week that Spotify has been working on AI-powered playlists. These playlists enable users to create lists with the help of prompts. However, Spotify chose not to confirm this information as they do not comment on new features.
Using screenshots of Spotify’s code, Reddit user Hypixely reported a few weeks ago that the new, more costly tier will be available for $19.99 monthly, with AI playlists and lossless audio. The latter is no longer called “HiFi,” the premium service that Spotify had previously announced but never launched.
Regarding the delay, in Spotify‘s Q2 earnings release, CEO Daniel Ek emphasized that they consider Hi-Fi as an asset, despite its appeal to dedicated streaming enthusiasts. We are actively exploring ways to leverage it to enhance our future value, but we don’t have any specific announcements to make. Analyzing his statement, he might allude to integrating Hi-Fi into a future pricing strategy, potentially involving a redesign to make it more appealing to a broader audience.
The Redditor had highlighted that Superpremium customers could filter their library by mood, activity, or genre, which Messina now verifies. Messina also added that options like vibe and beats per minute were other filtering options currently available. Additionally, according to Messina, Superpremium comes with 20–30 hours of audiobook listening, a little more than the previously revealed 15 free hours now included with the Premium subscription.
The Reddit user also discovered a Superpremium function called Soundcheck that provides information about your listening preferences and enables you to identify the sound combination “uniquely yours.” However, Messina notices that this function is now called “Your Sound Capsule.” The “playlist in a bottle” musical time capsule experience from Spotify, which was introduced earlier this year, is what he feels may be involved. Additionally, Messina discovered references to Highlights, a feature that appears to be similar to Last—FM’s listening statistics.
When contacted for comment, Spotify declined to provide additional information on the recent findings.
