A 10-day mosquito (dengue and Aedes) eradication program has been announced in the DNCC area. The mayor said the program would run from May 18 to 26.
Taking part in the road show, the mayor along with the councilors of the area, DNCC officials and local people toured several roads and made the people aware about cleanliness in controlling Aedes and Dengue. During this time, he visited two buildings under construction and alerted homeowners to find Aedes mosquito larvae. The Mayor visited the classrooms of International Hope School Bangladesh to create awareness among the students.
In response to a question, he said that the information we have received suggests that dengue may be more serious this time than last year. My point is, we will try our best. I will do whatever needs to be done with my councils, with everyone in the city corporation. The campaign will be carried out in every ward.
Mayor Atiqul Islam warned that the city corporation would be strict in dealing with dengue and said, “We will take legal action if Aedes larvae are found.” There will be regular cases. Last time I was fined up to five lakh rupees. This time too, it will be jail. Strict action will be taken.
He said that this combing operation will be conducted in all the wards of Dhaka North City Corporation area. At the end of this campaign I will go on the campaign again. Then if anyone asks not to be fined, it will not be heard. I have to be strict for the security of this city.
Instructing the mosquito department, the mayor said that during the campaign, all the ten-day holidays of the mosquito department were canceled. On this day they all have to be at work. Our councilors will be on the ground. Women councilors will be on the ground. Socially, I am also instructing all schools, neighborhoods, mosques to preach during the sermon.
Talking to the parents of the school at that time, the mayor said that Aedes mosquito is born in clear water, tires, flower pots. So I request you to ‘throw away the accumulated water once in three days’. Let us all be aware. Make others aware. We have to take responsibility for our own lives. So we will clean our house before we wake up in the morning.
The mayor said action would be taken against those who played a role in mosquito breeding, adding that action would be taken against them if Aedes larvae were found, whether public or private or semi-public.
