With inflation at an all time high, it’s tough to always justify buying new items if they aren’t exactly a necessity. Jewelry for example can be a splurge item, so you want to take care of them as much as possible so you can wear your favorite pieces all the time. We asked jewelry experts their top hacks when it comes to precious trinkets to get the most out of them in 2023.

1) Use a ring size adjuster to save money

Daniel Bari, the vice president of Dreamland Jewelry remarks that, “if you find your ring size can fluctuate frequently, it might not be in your best interest to permanently change the size of your ring. This can be costly to do often, and can weaken the ring over time. Instead of looking at getting your ring size permanently changed, it can be beneficial to look into getting a ring size adjuster.

A ring size adjuster is cost effective, and helps to prevent your ring from falling off of your finger, or sliding around. Most of the ring adjusters are clear, making them almost invisible which is perfect for everyday wear. It is also great as a temporary solution if you do plan to change the ring size eventually, but is not really a necessity as these adjusters can be a permanent solution”.

2) Don’t throw away those disposable straws

Disposable straws are great to use for keeping your necklaces from getting tangled when traveling. One of the worst things about having to pack up your jewelry is the mess you end up with at the end of it because of your tangled necklaces and bracelets. A disposable straw (whether plastic or paper), can be adjusted by being cut to be able to keep your necklaces from becoming a ball of metal.

All you have to do is slide the necklace strand through the straw, and clasp it. This keeps your delicate chains from knotting and becoming tangled up with other jewelry. You can place them in your travel bag and not worry about them at all! THe best part is you can keep the straws and use them repeatedly if you travel often.

3) Stock up on adhesive bandages

“Adhesive bandages are not just for cuts and scrapes! These bandages are actually great to have on hand if you often wear dangly or heavy earrings. When you wear very heavy earrings, it can cause your earlobe to sag, and it can also be quite uncomfortable.

If you cut a small piece of the adhesive part of a bandage and place it on the back of your ear, it creates a second skin that helps to keep your ear from drooping. You just piece the bandage with the earring back, and you can wear heavy or dangly earrings all day long with little to no discomfort”, says Shanna Nelson the CEO of The Artisan Rings.

4) Keep a polishing cloth on your person

A polishing cloth is your best friend if you wear a lot of gold or silver jewelry. These cloths can instantly bring back shine to your pieces, and also can buff away small scratches. When you wear jewelry everyday, it is bound to lose its luster and become a little dinged up. And although this is normal, it does diminish the look of them.

Polishing cloths can be used for most noble metals, and are small enough to take with you anywhere you go. Another little hack to keep your jewelry looking new is to soak them in hot water with dish soap and use a soft bristle toothbrush to scrub away any dirt or debris. You can also use baking soda to really shine them up, and this is especially helpful for things like engagement rings!

5)Use lash glue to keep your necklace in place

Nothing is more annoying than having to adjust your necklace constantly to keep the clasp at the back of your neck. Especially for special events like your wedding, you want everything to be perfectly in place.

A quick tip is to actually use false eyelash glue to keep your necklace in place. All you have to do is place a small dot of glu at the back of your neck, and wait for it to become tacky. You can then push the clasp into the glue and it will stay there all day long. Lash glue typically dries clear, so you wouldn’t even know it was there!
