Veer Kunwar Singh led the Indian rebellion in 1857 against the British in Bihar. He was nearly around of 80 years and failing health when he was called upon to take up arms. He was a prominent leader and a tough opponent who sometimes puzzled the British army. He was an expert in the art of guerrilla warfare and he knew warfare tactics.

He assumed command of the soldiers who had revolted at Danapur, Bihar in 1857. Five days later, he occupied Arrah, the district headquarters. Veer Kunwar Singh left his ancestral village and went to Luck now in December 1857. There he had a good fight with the British Army for nearly a year.

During this rebellion, once Veer Kunwar Singh was crossing the Ganga River and got shot by the British army, one of the bullets got stuck in his wrist. 

Veer Kunwar Singh felt that his hand had become useless and that there was an additional risk of infection due to the bullet shot. He drew his sword and hesitantly cut off his left hand near the elbow and offered it to the Ganges.

Veer Kunwar Singh was one of the bravest soldiers and commanders of his time, he was also among the prominent leaders who fought for India’s Independence.

He died after the battle fought on 23 April 1858, in Jagdishpur. The troops under the control of the East India Company were completely routed. Veer Kunwar Singh bravely fought against the British Army with the help of his army. He drove away the British army and brought down Union Jack from Jagdishpur Fort and hoisted his flag.

He then returned to his palace on 23 April 1858 and soon died on 26 April 1858. This was his last battle fought with the British army.
