Vinoba Bhave was born on 11 September 1895 in Pen, town in Maharashtra, India to Narahari Shambhu Rao and Rukmini Devi. He belonged to an upper-caste, Hindu Brahmin Family.
At a very young age, Vinoba Bhave had a deep sense of spiritualism instilled within him by his religious mother. He had read Bhagavad Gita at an early age and had learnt various regional languages with the help of reading scriptures.
Vinoba Bhave abandoned his high school studies in 1916 to join Mahatma Gandhi’s Ashram at Sabarmati, in Ahmedabad. Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings brought a sea change in the life of Vinoba Bhave, he dedicated his life to improving Indian village life.

In the year 1951, Vinoba Bhave started his peace trek from the region of Telangana. On 18th April 1951, The Harijans of the Pochampalli village requested him to provide them with around 80 acres of land to make a living. Vinoba Bhave asked the landlords of the village to come forward the save the lives of the Harijans. A landlord got up and offered up the required land.
This was the beginning of the Bhoodan Movement (Land Gift Movement). This Bhoodan Movement continued for around thirteen years and Vinoba Bhave toured across the whole nation, around a total distance of 58741 Km.
He got successful in collecting 4.4 million acres of land, around which 1.3 million was distributed among poor landless farmers. This movement added a new chapter in the history of sacrifices and non-violence.
