ZTE Corporation, a world-renowned provider of telecommunications technology solutions, partners with Turkcell to set up the industry’s first commercial OTN (optical transport network) that supports 12 THz ultra-wide spectrum in Turkey’s fourth largest city Bursa. The network will increase Turkey’s bandwidth capacity, enabling Turkcell’s customers to experience high-speed internet assets.

The 5G network needs bandwidth capacity several times higher than 4G networks to o cope with the rapid rise of 5G network traffic. And Turkcell chose to create an advanced metro wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network. Earlier in 2021, by virtue of its strong technological prowess, ZTE Corporation was selected by Turkcell exclusively, aiming to develop its metro WDM network architecture in Bursa.

For the WDM network, ZTE Corporation has supplied its potent OTN platform that is based on 1T backplane bandwidth, which significantly boosts the network transmission capacity. ZXONE 9700, launched by ZTE, is a novel universal switching OTN device designed for 100G and beyond transmissions. It can be used in the metro networks and the backbone core layer, as well as fully fulfill operators’ needs for flexible scheduling, transparent transmission, service management, aggregation processing, and supervision of large-granularity data services. It applies the G2K sub-rack with a cross-connect capacity that is totally up to 10T. Also, it supports 1T bandwidth’s single-slot backplane and the upgraded universal cell switching platform. Therefore, it can implement non-blocking cross-connect scheduling of PKT, ODUk, and VC services.

Besides, the ZXMP M721 CX66A (E) device is also applied in this project. This lightweight OTN product, the ZXMP M721 metro WDM device, is used in metro network access and aggregation layers. With flexible service and flexible service access, it can efficiently decrease power consumption and equipment room space while also lowering O&M (operation and maintenance) expenditures significantly.

Beyond 100G OTN has become an inevitable option for enabling the creation of new services. ZTE Corporation applies the 200G PS-16QAM system in this project to satisfy the users’ metro network transmission needs. By adopting the electrical domain shaping technology, the system can develop transmission capability and achieve ultra-long-haul transmission. And it also supports the smooth evolution to 400G. In a word, the application of the novel technology dramatically enhances the beyond 100G networks transmission capacity.

At the same time, ZTE Corporation has a preset C+L-band 2 bands coupler on the advanced metro WDM network to assist Turkcell in realizing smooth and quick upgrades to multi-band. The traditional C band’s spectrum bandwidth is about 4 THz, while the C+L band’s spectrum bandwidth can increase to 12 THz. So compared with the standard original 80-channel C band, the C+L band can enhance the future bandwidth capacity by 200%, offering more substantial transmission capacity without increasing fiber resource investment and completely meeting Turkcell’s requirement for the future data network bandwidth without service interruption.

In terms of system dependability, ZTE Corporation provides multiple protection mechanisms, including power board 1+1 protection, control board 1+1 protection, WASON (WDM automated switch optical network), and SNCP (subnetwork connection protection), to drastically increase network intelligence and service reliability.

In terms of intelligent O&M, ZTE Corporation employs the CDC-F ROADM solution, and the CDC-F, respectively, refers to colorless, directionless, contentions, as well as flex grid. The solution largely develops the wavelength flexibility, decreases the stress on the equipment’s board, and streamlines the O&M.

ZTE Corporation also offers automatic power optimization to realize power equalization at the multiplex section layer as well as the channel layer. OTDR (optical time domain reflectometer) is applied to find fiber faults within minutes in order to achieve automatic fiber recovery and protection. At the same time, the ZENIC ONE system published by ZTE Corporation is used to manage and control the network. That system supports automatic and fast service provisioning and offers open northbound and southbound interfaces to enhance interoperability.

Meanwhile, the system also supports smart fault analysis and prediction to decrease the fault location time, as well as enables proactive and automatic O&M that is simpler than the previous, thereby enhancing the user experience and efficiency.

It is worth noting that the WDM project’s service is provided by Netas, Turkey’s top information and communication technology firm, with ZTE Corporation as its principal shareholder. The commercially successful 12 THz WDM project will accelerate Turkcell’s future 5G network development in Turkey.

In addition to Turkcell, ZTE Corporation also has cooperated with Turk Telekom, a major fixed-line operator in Turkey, to deploy the largest IPTV/OTT platforms in Turkey.

To substitute the legacy platforms on the current network, ZTE Corporation has successfully achieved the cutover of roughly one million STBs (set-top boxes) and cooperated with more than ten third-party vendors to deliver over ten types of terminals as well as more than a thousand customized functions. The new platform adopts a new integrated video platform system and facilitates smooth evolution, offering consumers whole new viewing experiences.

To offer more than 10 million subscribers more functions and diverse video content, Turk Telekom has collaborated with ZTE Corporation to develop a new video platform that integrates IPTV and OTT. The new platform can provide customers with superior viewing experiences due to its superb UI design, extensive functions, robust system, and different TV service scenarios. Furthermore, it supports over ten different types of terminals, which includes Smart TV, PC, TV STB, and IOS/Android mobile devices. That can considerably meet the requirements of users in a variety of scenarios.

At present, Turk Telekom’s subscribers have been migrated to the new platform launched by ZTE Corporation. As an industry-leading supplier of multimedia video products, ZTE serves more than 200 million customers from its over 120 commercial cases in more than 40 countries in the whole world, showcasing its excellent innovation capability.

ZTE Corporation is dedicated to continuously innovating and achieving technological exploration to develop telecom across the world. In the years ahead, it will collaborate with its business partner to promote continual developments and drive Turkey’s network digital transformation.
