At least 43 inmates have been killed in a prison riot in Ecuador. The incident took place in the early hours of Monday (May 9) local time after riots broke out between members of rival groups held in the country’s Santo Domingo prison. Most of the victims were stabbed to death. News Al Jazeera.

Prison riots and deaths are very common in this South American country. Many prisoners escaped from the prison after the riots.

Ecuador’s Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo said 112 of the escaped prisoners had been recaptured and 107 were still at large.

Authorities say the riots began after a court order transferred the leader of a terrorist group to Belavista Prison in Santo Domingo. The transfer of the man on a court order may have caused unrest among the detainees.

Last year, 316 prisoners died in riots in various prisons across Ecuador.
