Have you ever considered how useful it can be to have a secondary phone number? What if you could have one for work and one for your social life? And how do you think it would feel to have the liberty of not giving out your main number to whoever you choose?

There are a lot of positive aspects to having some extra phone numbers to play around with, and a burner phone, or its equivalent in the form of an app, could prove to be pretty useful. So are you on the fence about getting a burner phone for yourself? Let’s fix that.

Protect Your Identity

Everything is connected back to your phone number in one way or another, from social media apps to project managing systems to the apps you play for fun in your downtime. That’s a lot of stuff that can be traced back to your phone!

However, with a burner phone, you can create an extra barrier between all of your online information and your personal number.

If you decide to give someone an alternate phone number, the number connected to your social media accounts won’t suddenly give them access to more of your life than you originally bargained for because there isn’t that level of connection. They won’t have to see any of your private pictures or public model shots unless you explicitly give them that level of access.

This can be pretty useful, especially if you’re only giving out your number for one-off instances of communication via text or phone call.

A Burner Phone Number is Easy to Ditch

As the word “burner” implies, it’s easy to get away from this extra phone number if you need to. But that doesn’t mean that you need to throw away your burner phone, nor do you need to actually burn it.

There are cheap and easy alternatives, like some downloadable phone apps, that allow you to manage your new number from a phone that you already have.

That means that you can also delete your burner phone number whenever you feel the need to, whether you no longer feel safe using it, you decide you no longer need it, or you just don’t want to have to manage more than one number.

Burner Phones Offer Easy Organization

As mentioned previously, burner phones give you the option of having multiple phone numbers. Whether you don’t want people who are only going to be in contact with you for a short period to have your regular number, or you just want to make your social life a little more organized, you have those options.

A Number Just for Work

A good idea is to use one of your numbers just for work or school obligations, like signing up for school-related websites and services, meeting up with your group project team, or you need to get into contact with your teacher, professor, or boss.

This means that, especially if you’re working a job where you clock in, you can leave your work phone at home while you’re out taking care of your social obligations or just generally having a good time. You won’t need to deal with work calls interrupting the good time that you’re having with your friends on your time off.

A Number Just for School

And you can do something similar for your school obligations, deciding to mute calls from a particular number if you’re sleeping or just taking a well-deserved break from all of the homework you’ve been doing.

A Number Just for Deals

And you likely have text notifications you’ve signed up for, but you don’t want those notifications clogging up your inbox. You can use a burner phone for signing up to these companies that you don’t always want text messages from, and instead check on deals they’re offering when it’s more convenient for you (like when you actually have extra money to spend).

How Expensive is a Burner Phone?

In a lot of cases, a burner phone doesn’t need to be very expensive at all for you to get what you actually want. And this is largely because you probably don’t need to actually purchase a physical phone that’s separate from your regular smartphone or device.

Again, there are some apps that offer inexpensive monthly and annual subscriptions to their burner phone-related services. And that means that, while the numbers are pretty cheap to begin with, you can also cancel this prepaid phone plan with fewer repercussions.

So if you thought that protecting your anonymity and privacy, or even just finding an alternate way to organize your work and social lives, was going to be pretty expensive, that no longer has to be a very big concern.

And, especially if you had any concerns about the legitimacy of these alternate services, some will even offer free trial periods for your own peace of mind without you having to spend any money.

You don’t need to pay for two phone contracts that are equivalent to what you’re paying right now. At least, not unless you really want to.
