England once again set a world record in ODI cricket. Eoin Morgan broke the record for highest run in an innings for the third time. England averaged 498 for four against the Netherlands in Amstelveen yesterday. Phil Salt (122), David Malan (125) and Josh Butler (182) set a new world record. England won the match by a record 232 runs. The Dutch scored 289 runs for the target of 499 runs.
At one time it seemed impossible to cross the 400-run milestone in ODI cricket. Sri Lanka’s 398 runs in 1998 was the highest in ODI cricket. But 10 years later, in 2008, South Africa and Australia changed their minds. Both teams crossed the 400-run milestone in a single match (Australia 434/4 and South Africa 438/9). Then Sri Lanka, India and New Zealand also crossed this milestone. But England adds a little more. For the first time in 2015, they crossed 400 runs against New Zealand (408/9). Then in 2016, the English scored 444/3 runs against Pakistan and averaged the world record. England broke Sri Lanka’s record of 443 runs. The English were not satisfied with the record average. They took the record to a new height with 461 runs against Australia in 2016.Yesterday, the English batsmen beat the bowlers of the Netherlands. Josh Butler hit a six alone at 14 o’clock. In all, there were 26 sixes in the innings. The English also touched the world record of three centuries out of four sixes. Earlier, cricket fans have witnessed three centuries in an innings in ODIs only twice. Hashim Amla (153), Riley Russo (127) and ABD Villiers (149) of South Africa scored centuries against the West Indies in January 2015.
Breaking the all record
De Kock (109), du Plessis (133) and ABD Villiers (119) of South Africa scored centuries against India in October of the same year. This time the English also scored three centuries in one innings of ODIs (Phil Salt 122, David Malan 125 and Josh Butler 162).
It took the cricketing world 10 years to break Sri Lanka’s record of 396 runs. How long will it take to break the world record of 498 runs of England!
