Mercedes owners in the US will soon be able to add ChatGPT to their already exquisite cars. The automaker is integrating OpenAI’s conversational AI agent into its MBUX infotainment system, though it’s unclear what it might be used for.
Beginning tomorrow, June 16, owners of MBUX-compatible models in the United States can choose to participate in a beta test that turns on ChatGPT capabilities. This will allow the huge language model, which is incredibly flexible, to improve the conversational capabilities of the car. You can sign up by saying to your automobile, “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program.”
But it’s not apparent for what. An automobile, after all, is a relatively tightly controlled space. People need to be able to operate basic automotive operations like driving, navigation, and media control while keeping their eyes on the road, and a voice interface is sometimes the safest or best way to achieve this.
While conducting a back-and-forth on any subject, ChatGPT, on the other hand, excels at appearing human while creating fresh facts to keep the discussion moving along. It may write or plagiarise code, synthesise and summarise existing text, or even assist you in creating wedding vows.
A voice assistant will be available to users that can hold conversations in addition to taking natural voice instructions. Participants will soon be able to ask the Voice Assistant for extra information while keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. This includes asking for directions, a new dinner recipe, or an answer to a challenging issue.
A somewhat complex question like “What’s a good independent sandwich shop on my route that’s within half a mile of a gas station” would be too difficult for a typical speech interface, for example. It could be useful to have that feature if you don’t have a passenger to look that up for you. Who asks for a fresh meal recipe when traveling? Is that the most effective use case they could think of?
The technology’s advantages are rather speculative, as usual, and it’s safe to say that no motorist requested this feature. Maybe Mercedes is just too exhausted to manage its voice interface service and would rather dump it to a third party. When using the Mercedes Me app, the UI clearly states, “Powered by ChatGPT in Microsoft AI,” in MBUX, and looks like a nested doll. What are they doing?
The voice command information gathered is anonymized and analyzed before being stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud.
Mercedes-Benz engineers will learn valuable information about particular demands, allowing them to define exact objectives for the advancement of voice control. The intuitive voice assistant will be further improved using feedback from the beta test, and the deployment strategy for big language models in new markets and languages will be determined.
It is a beta test, after all, and part of the idea is to discover how people utilize it. Additionally, if you’re a private person, it’s unlikely that you already own a brand-new Mercedes.
