Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born on 22 May 1772 in Radhanagar, Hooghly District, Bengal Presidency to Ramkanto Roy and Tarinidevi. He was born into an orthodox Hindu Bengali Family. His father Ramkanto, was a Vaishnavite, while his mother Tarinidevi, was from a Shaivite Family. His father was a great Sanskrit scholar.
During his childhood, Raja Ram Mohan Roy witnessed the death of his sister-in-law Sati. The seventeen-year-old was dragged towards the pyre where Raja Ram Mohan Roy witnessed her terrified state.
