“The United Nations Security Council is deeply concerned about the peace and security of Ukraine,” the statement said. Guterres met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last week and with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Kiev. His visit last week paved the way for the evacuation of about 500 civilians from the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol and the besieged Azvastal steel plant.
Russia launched an attack on Ukraine on February 24, outraged by Kiev’s move to join the NATO alliance.
