Shivaram Rajguru was born on 24 August 1908 in Rajgurunagar, Maharashtra, India to Hari Narayana and Parvati Bai. As a child, he grew up witnessing British atrocities against Indians. His family had strong anti-British and nationalist sentiments.
He joined the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) when he was only sixteen years old. This HSRA was founded by Chandra Shekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, and others in 1928. Shivaram Rajguru believed in militant nationalism and thought that oppression was to be met with ferocity and violence. He did not have faith in Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence movement Satyagraha.
