Lala Lajpat Rai was born on 28 January 1865 in Dhudike, a district of Punjab, India to Munshi Radha Krishan Agrawal and Gulab Devi Agrawal. He was the eldest son of his parents. His father was a scholar of two languages namely Urdu and Persian. His mother was a religious lady who inculcated strong moral values in her children.
His family values allowed Lala Lajpat Rai the freedom of having different faiths and beliefs. He spent much of his time in Jagraon, Punjab. His house still stands in Jagraon which has now become a museum.
Lala Lajpat Rai liked reading and he was deeply impressed by the ideals of patriotism and nationalism outlined by Italian Revolutionary leader Giuseppe Mazzini.
In 1980, Lala Lajpat Rai was associated with the Punjab National Bank and Lakshmi Insurance Company. He remained popular for his activism, he organised various meetings with his supporters and also established an orphanage. After the completion of Lala Lajpat Rai’s schooling, his father was transferred to Hisar in 1886 and there he started practising law. In the same year, he helped Mahatma Hans Raj to establish the Dayan and Anglo-Vedic School and he also founded the district branches of the Indian National Congress.
In 1892 he moved to Lahore to practice at the Lahore High Court. He also practised patriotism and journalism and was a regular contributor to several newspapers. He was also the co-founder of the Punjab National Bank.
Politics:
Lala Lajpat Rai joined the Indian National Congress in the year 1920, and he also took part in the political agitation in Punjab. He was appointed as the president of the Indian National Congress in the Calcutta special session of 1920. He also founded various non-profitable welfare organisations.
Vedas were an important part of the Hindu religion and he approved that everyone should be allowed to read them. He believed that they should be allowed to read and learn from the Vedas.
