Why Should You Preserve Flowers?

As the name suggests, preserving flowers can help make their color, beauty, and shape last longer. From an emotional standpoint, it’s a way to keep your love and passion for Valentine’s Day lasting longer. Think of it as a way to say and express that you and your partner love and stand against the testament of time.

It’s also a nice hobby to get into to kill time or relieve stress. The final result of preserving flowers can be very stimulating and relaxing; they are also great for decorating a space, whether it’s a living room, a kitchen, or a work desk. It’s also fairly easy to do if you have some time; everything can be easily purchased in a craft store, and plenty of flower delivery KL services are available online.

4 Ways Of Preserving Flowers

Air Drying

It is one of the simplest ways to preserve flowers, but it also takes the longest amount of time. However, it is also the most effective way to preserve large bouquets. Take your bouquet out of the water and leave the stems of the flowers to try for around 3-4 hours. Remove any greenery that you don’t like and use wire to reinforce the weaker stems.

Once fully dry, hang them upside down in a cool dry place. Because the moisture drains downwards, hanging the bouquet upside down helps to keep the tips looking full and lush.

The best way to do this is by using a line and securing them with an elastic band. If possible, do this to each stem one by one, and avoid direct sunlight as exposure to it can affect the coloration of the flowers and foliage. Leave it for a week, and you’ll have a dry bouquet of flowers with its beauty intact. Dried flowers have a certain charm of rustic appeal to them.

Flower Pressing

A time-and-tested way of preserving singular, delicate flowers. However, this way of preservation only works for flowers with flat blooms and stems. It’s also very simple to do. Cut your flowers to your desired length, trimming off any unwanted leaves or petals if you wish to do so. In some cases, they have a device called a flower press and can follow the instructions given by the device, but there is another way of doing it.

Take a book, hardcover if possible, and place your flower into the pages of it. Close it and use a heavy object, most likely another book, to apply pressure on it to secure it and press down the flowers. Be sure the position of the flowers is in the state you want them to be. Leave the flowers inside the book for about a week or until fully dried.

And there you go! Beautifully flat and dried flowers. Pin them to a board or paste them onto a canvas for a simple decorative piece for your living space. You can even use them to decorate a journal entry or leave them in some picture frames.

Silica Sand

Silica sand, also known as Silica gel, is the best way to preserve flowers in their original color and hue. It’s a fantastic way to keep their shape, form, and color intact, and even the whole flower. However, it’s not the best way to make a bouquet as it takes a lot of space and materials.

There are two ways you can preserve flowers with silica sand. One is putting a couple of centimeters of silica sand in a bowl. Add the flower you’d like to preserve and cover it with more sand. Leave this for a week, and it will dry out. If you’re in a time crunch or need a gift pronto, there is a faster way. Repeat the process, but place the bowl inside a microwave next to another container filled with hot water. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time until the flower is completely dry. Leave the flower for 24 hours in the silica sand.

Soon, you’ll have a beautiful, fresh-looking flower preserved and ready to be decorated and gifted.

Resin

The most common way to preserve flowers but also the most misunderstood way. Many people believe that by preserving flowers using resin, you cover them with resin or dunk them in the resin itself. But to perfectly and efficiently preserve the flower in resin, the flowers must be dried first.

Dry the flower you wish to preserve in resin using the methods above and ensure you’re wearing protective gear like gloves and a face mask. Find a mold of your choice and pour in some resin – but don’t fill it to the top. Use tweezers to place your flowers into the mold in the way you’d like, along with any other additions like beads, flowers, colored flakes, etc., and then add a final layer of resin to fill up the mold. Pop any air bubbles with a toothpick. Leave for 24 hours to let the resin cure. This is a fun and wonderful way to preserve flowers because moulds come in several different shapes, like cubes, spheres, hearts, slabs, and even unique ones like skulls and animals.
