Never underestimate the power of effective keywords when it comes to search engine optimization or SEO. Choosing your keywords with care can literally mean the difference between success and failure when it comes to your website goals, whether you’re selling a product, promoting a service, or providing informational material.

How do you make sure you’re choosing the right keywords for your needs?

Think like a customer

When you think like a customer, your content will be more targeted to what they’re looking for. In other words, by thinking like a potential customer, you’ll be able to provide content that answers at least a few of their questions or their curiosity about your product, service, or informative content. This is more important than ever now due to use of voice assisted technology used on mobile devices. The words a person uses to search for information are usually fairly precise.

Use a combination of short and long tail keywords

Keywords are specific target words or phrases that customers typically search for. For example, specific target keywords generally produce vast search engine results such as ‘books’. However, when you extend them to provide more detail, such as mystery fiction books, you have just produced a long tail keyword that more specifically targets exactly what you’re looking for. A long tail keyword can be even more specific such as mystery fiction books by ‘author’.

Be aware that single or two word keywords provide broader results, while long tail keywords narrow down search engine fields. A mixture of short and long tail keywords or phrases in your content is effective in refining searches that attract traffic and increase potential for increased conversion rates. Keep in mind that long tail keywords produce lower search volumes, but don’t let that stop you from using them, as they are more targeted and effective in many scenarios.

Use effective keywords on every page

Use effective keywords on every page of your website or in your blog content to optimize your content. A keyword on every page focuses on the primary reason or idea of the content that a visitor will find on that page or within the blog. While keywords need to be prevalent and varied, take care not to overuse them. The use of a primary keyword 2 to 3 times within a page, article, or blog is effective. Using that keyword in different ways is also effective, but use care so as not to make their use obvious. Keywords must make sense and flow easily within the content of your pages.

Use keywords in your page formats

Use keywords in page titles, H1headers, meta-descriptions, and headings throughout your content. Placing a keyword in your title, and in at least one or two subheadings (different combinations of wording) and in your meta-description (the brief blurb or snippet of information that provides information about what your article or topic is about) ban enhance your search engine results, so choose effective keywords for SEO optimization for greater visibility.
