Sukhdev Thapar was born on 15 May 1907 in Naughara in Ludhiana, Punjab, India to Ramlal Thapar and Ralli Devi. He belonged to a Hindu Punjabi Family. As a child, he faced many hardships. After losing his father at a very young age he was brought up by his mother, Ralli Devi and his uncle, Achait Ram Thapar.
Since his childhood days, he grew up witnessing British atrocities against Indians, which led him to join the revolutionaries, vowing to set India free from British Raj. He showed a defiant spirit towards the British government from an early age. During his school days, he used to refuse to salute the British Military Officers when they visited the school. He was caned by his teacher for such hostile behaviour.
It was the arrest of his uncle. Achait Ram Thapar which turned him into an activist and led him to revolutionary activities for freedom from colonial rule. He participated in many activities to promote national consciousness among the country’s young people in the Punjab region.
Sukhdev Thapar along with his associates Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Rajguru were arrested in 1928 for the assassination of J.P. Saunders, he took revenge for Lala Lajpat Rai‘s Death. After the Central Assembly Hall Bombings in Delhi on 8 April 1929. Sukhdev Thapar and his fellows were arrested and sentenced to death as a verdict.
